Executive dysfunction arising from
Time management and organisation
Impact
Executive Dysfunction is a recognised challenge for those with ADHD, resulting in difficulties with regulating alertness, sustaining effort, prioritising, activating to work, utilising working memory, monitoring and self-regulating action, and emotion regulation.
The My-Prompt interactive app is recommended for [NAME], as it is designed to assist individuals who have impaired Executive Function. My-Prompt can assist [NAME] to effectively manage and develop their currently impaired executive functions by providing specialist strategies designed to improve academic performance and support wellbeing. ADHD typically causes difficulties with starting or completing tasks. As a result, [NAME] may be highly distractible, unable to resist the temptation to be sidetracked, and unable to forgo an immediate pleasure for a greater distant reward. Not being able to get started on a task, or not knowing how to break it down can result in overwhelm and anxiety which, if left unchecked, can further spiral into depression.
Impact on studies:
- Struggles to break modules, assignments and revision into manageable steps, thereby increasing how much time it takes to complete a task.
- Misses deadlines or starts work too late because the scale of a task feels overwhelming.
- Finds it hard to judge what to do first when several deadlines compete.
Suggested recommendation
[NAME] experiences significant difficulties with planning, organisation and prioritisation caused by the impact of their ADHD on executive functions. This impacts their ability to manage competing academic deadlines independently. My-Prompt is recommended to provide structured task breakdown, enabling [NAME] to decompose large assignments into small, sequenced steps with reminders. This scaffolds the executive function skills [NAME] finds difficult, and reduces the cognitive load of self-organisation, supporting independent study. My-Prompt can be accessed via the app on a smartphone or tablet as well as on a computer, thereby enabling unhindered access to the tools they require to compensate for the impact of their ADHD on executive function.
- The My Goals zone will guide [NAME] in breaking tasks down into smaller, more manageable steps which are linked to rewards and are added to the success timeline when completed. This will help [NAME] not to become overwhelmed and to be motivated to complete their goals.
- My-Prompt can provide [NAME] the option to be prompted when working on a task. This feature will help them to manage distractibility and encourages them to stay on task.
- My-Prompt provides a traffic light system to assist [NAME] in prioritising their goals in order of importance. Goal deadlines can be easily synched with their own calendars, such as their university class timetable.
- The pomodoro feature increases productivity, enhances focus, reduces stress and aids time management by breaking work into short, timed intervals with regular breaks. This strategy is designed to help [NAME] to 'train' their brain to focus for short periods and to resist distractions. At the end of each timed study session, [NAME] will be able to input details of what they achieved which is added to their timeline. This feeds into the success cycle whereby 'success breeds success'.
- Approaching deadlines can cause anxiety and stress for [NAME] which in turn can result in procrastination that adversely affects academic progress and quality of life. My-Prompt has a range of wellbeing features, including a mood tracker, which will support [NAME] in identifying patterns in mood fluctuations. My-Prompt's Challenge Zone will enable [NAME] to input potential problems that could result in 'shutdown', and form bespoke solutions which will support them during an impending crisis.
- Psychoeducational strategies can be accessed via skills videos which provide advice and guidance on academic topics. [NAME] can build their own bespoke library that will assist them to be motivated and organised.
- My-Prompt has a range of wellbeing videos which provide mental health strategies. New topics are released regularly, allowing [NAME] to build their own 'best fit' library.
- My-Prompt facilitates access to Shout, a national 24/7 mental health support service which can provide [NAME] with emergency wellbeing support.
Practical sessions and placements
Impact
ADHD is both a SpLD and a mental health condition which means it can present unique challenges during placements and field trips. During placements, planning and decision making tend to be more instant and dynamic than in an educational setting. This can result in an increase in stress and anxiety for [NAME]. A propensity towards being impulsive can contribute to wrong decisions being made, whilst poor time management and poor time awareness can contribute towards lateness and non-task completion. Difficulties with social communication can result in miscommunication with others on placement and cause overthinking and worrying about what has been said. This rumination typically occurs during the evening and night, often resulting in sleep difficulties. Those with ED also report an adverse impact on self-esteem.
Suggested recommendation
[NAME] reports marked difficulty with task initiation, impacting their attendance in classes and placements, despite understanding its importance. My-Prompt is recommended to provide activation prompts, reward loops and an optional motivational avatar that will help [NAME] overcome the barrier of starting. By lowering the threshold to begin a task, the tool will support [NAME] to engage with coursework in a timely way and reduces the anxiety associated with procrastination. The My Goals zone is a planning and prioritising tool that can be used to break placement tasks into smaller steps. [NAME] can choose to receive prompts when working on these steps. This prompting feature will address the difficulties caused by distractibility, which will be particularly to the fore in an unfamiliar setting, and support them in keeping on track with task completion.
- Procrastination, which often arises out of overwhelm, can prevent [NAME] from getting started on placement tasks. My-Prompt's pomodoro feature can address overwhelm, as [NAME] will be able to focus on completing a more manageable chunk of the overall goal, rather than being overcome when contemplating its entirety. Seeing what they have achieved at the end of the timed period appear on their success timeline means that there is an immediate reward, which can stimulate their ability to hyper-focus.
- Setting timers or requesting prompts at specified points in a day can assist [NAME] with managing sensory and time-related challenges, and reduce the inclination to act on impulse. The My-Prompt push reminder feature, along with its voice interactive reminder feature, will help [NAME] be more time aware and remain on schedule.
- My-Prompt's wellbeing features can help to address rising anxiety which may be experienced as a result of moving from a structured educational setting to one that is more dynamic and less easy to predict. The Challenge Zone can assist with predicting difficulties that may arise whilst on placement and [NAME] can input solutions which they can access in the moment.
- The My-Prompt Thought Store can aid [NAME] to reflect on what happened during the day and to work through their thoughts and feelings. This can reduce looping negative thoughts and improve self-esteem.
- The holistic model embedded within My-Prompt will enable [NAME] to access support and encouragement at any time of day or night, offering a full range of strategies and guidance that are designed to support the exact need arising from [NAME]'s challenges at the exact point in time. This is essential when they are away from their familiar settings and support network.
Exams and timed assessments
Impact
Impaired executive function frequently causes students with ADHD to experience difficulties when mentally processing, organising, storing and accessing information. A reduced working memory will impact retention and the ability to mentally manipulate information. These impairments will be exacerbated by poor concentration and high levels of distractibility which in turn will reduce motivation. These combined difficulties can lead to frustration and errors for [NAME] when attempting to review and retain large amounts of course related content.
Impact on studies:
- Forgets instructions, loses track of time, and forgets steps within a task.
- Loses track of where they are in a piece of work, requiring frequent re-reading.
- Finds it hard to hold information in mind while completing work.
Suggested recommendation
[NAME] presents with working-memory difficulties that affect their ability to retain instructions, and recall multi-step processes. My-Prompt is recommended as a revision aid using its My Memory tools — voice-recorded reminders, voice and sticky notes, study sets and flashcards — which externalise information [NAME] would otherwise struggle to hold in mind. This compensates for reduced working-memory capacity and supports accurate, independent completion of academic tasks. Traditional revision strategies are typically ineffective for students with executive dysfunction. My-Prompt revision videos will provide [NAME] with specific EF strategies proven to improve focus, motivation and consolidation.
- The My Goals zone will assist [NAME] in breaking tasks down into smaller, more realistic steps. This helps them not to become overwhelmed and to plan their revision schedule into manageable chunks.
- My-Prompt has a zone devoted to aiding memory and includes a study set feature which [NAME] can use to consolidate and retain information via multi-sensory techniques and mnemonic systems, to effectively transfer information into the long-term memory.
- The voice note function enables [NAME] to record information. This can be used whilst on the move which is an important choice given the proven link between memory and movement.
- My-Prompt can assist [NAME] in staying on task when revising through its prompts system. Similarly, the pomodoro feature in My-Prompt provides encouragement to ignore distractions and stay on task for the desired period of time.
- My-Prompt will increase motivation through its reward-based system where [NAME] can select how many points they are awarded for each revision session successfully achieved, which they can use to purchase a reward.
- My-Prompt has multiple tools to reduce stress and anxiety which [NAME] will typically experience around exam time. In addition to the app's mood tracker, challenge and solution zone and wellbeing videos, My-Prompt facilitates access to Shout, a national 24/7 mental health support service.
Social interaction and communication
Impact
ADHD will typically cause difficulties for [NAME] due to inattention during conversations, which can result in missed social cues, difficulty following discussions and poor recall of what was said following the event. Due to impairment in organising thoughts and high levels of distractibility, individuals with ADHD can zone in and out when listening and often wander off topic during conversations. Impulsivity can result in what is commonly described as a 'lack of filter', whilst poor emotion regulation can result in outbursts or comments that may later be regretted. This can cause difficulties in maintaining friendships and relationships which in turn can result in low mood and social isolation.
Suggested recommendation
- Social anxiety and ensuing isolation can adversely affect academic progress and quality of life. My-Prompt's mood tracker and optional notes feature can be regularly reviewed by [NAME] and their supporters to understand patterns of difficulties arising from social interactions.
- My-Prompt's Challenge Zone can be used to identify social situational fears and to input solutions which [NAME] can access during difficult moments when they may not otherwise be able to recall the strategies that could be of help.
- My-Prompt's library of skills and wellbeing videos provide a range of strategies that support Executive Function, including those relating to social communication. New topics are released regularly, allowing [NAME] to build their own 'best fit' library. App users can also request new topics from the My-Prompt team.
- The holistic model embedded within My-Prompt will enable [NAME] to access support and encouragement at any time of day or night, offering a full range of strategies and guidance that are designed to support the exact need arising from their disability at the exact point in time.
Emotional regulation and wellbeing
Impact
Placeholder — condition-specific wording to follow.
[NAME] can experience anxiety, low mood or rejection sensitivity, which disrupt study. They can find setbacks and feedback hard to manage, affecting motivation and self-esteem.
Suggested recommendation
[NAME]'s studies are affected by difficulties with emotional regulation and wellbeing, including anxiety and sensitivity to setbacks. My-Prompt is recommended for its wellbeing library — short videos on anxiety, panic and communication — alongside a success timeline that celebrates progress and supports self-esteem. These features help [NAME] manage the emotional barriers to study and maintain motivation throughout their course.
